Concrete Romance

Concrete Romance

A scale 1:1 reproduction of Caspar David Friedrich’s famous romantic mountain in the painting Wanderer above the sea of fog, painted around 1818. Made with rocaille (a concrete rock garden technique used to recreate artificial rocks) and enhanced with a lamp post, this sculpture becomes a possible street furniture that can be walked on. At the same time promontory, bench, lighting, anti-stationary rock, Concrete Romance exhumes the romantic themes of the end of the 18th century (individualism, sentimentalism, mysticism, the dominant/dominated relationship with nature, man facing an improbable and worrying destiny) to reveal their contemporary topicality.
